Recently, I was listening to BBC Radio 4’s Woman’s Hour discussing the pleasure of letter writing and of course being a member of a Pen Pal Club..

As I listened, I found myself smiling — and nodding along.

The discussion celebrated something many of us already know: there is something wonderfully special about receiving a handwritten letter.

A letter is not just a message.

It is time.

Someone has sat down, chosen their words, written them by hand, found an envelope, added a stamp and sent a little piece of themselves on a journey.

In our busy digital world, that feels increasingly precious.

The wonderful thing about letter writing is that it encourages us to slow down. Instead of a quick message sent between meetings, a letter invites a proper conversation.

You can talk about your garden.

A favourite book.

A holiday.

A family memory.

Something funny that happened during the week.

Sometimes the smallest details make the best letters.

And that is why pen pals still matter.

Pen pals were never really old-fashioned

Every so often, we hear that letter writing is “making a comeback”.

But for thousands of pen pals around the world, it never disappeared.

People have continued to write letters because they enjoy the connection that comes from getting to know another person through words on paper.
